PREPARING FOR AERATION & POWER RAKING

  1. Water the lawn the night before aerating. Moist soil is key to the best core aeration.

  2. Make sure the lawn is not overgrown. Mowed up to a few days prior is fine.

  3. Please mark or flag your sprinklers, valve boxes, drain covers, etc., within the body of the lawn. Items along the perimeter do not need to be marked, as we stay six inches in from the edge.

  4. Please clean up from pets before we arrive.

PLEASE NOTE

We do not remove plugs, thatch, or grass pulled up when aerating or power raking.

We recommend that you bag as you mow over the grass pulled up following power raking or using a leaf rake for clean up.

If your yard has tree roots at or near the surface, we are unable to service those sections.

AERATION

Why Aerate?

Even with the best care available, lawns can thin out and lose color due to hard or compacted soils and/or excessive thatch buildup. Aerating and power raking are the best treatments to reduce compaction, control thatch, fill-in bare spots, revitalize growth and allow the nutrients to reach the roots.

Tine spacing and core depth are key factors in optimizing aeration. We use aerators that deliver 12 plugs per sq. ft. compared to most other aerators that only deliver 6-9. Our aerators pull plugs 1-3 inches deep.

When Is The Best Time To Aerate?

The best time to aerate your lawn is when it becomes compact. Any time through the growing season is fine to do this. This is a simple thing to do to have a beautiful lawn.

Both spring and fall are ideal times to aerate. In spring, aerate between March and June. Perform fall aeration between August and November. Fertilize AFTER aeration.

Most lawns benefit from annual aeration. Heavily used lawns, or those growing on heavy clay or sub-soils benefit from aerating more than once each year.

What Is Aeration?

Technically speaking, aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve natural soil aeration. It’s commonly called “core aeration” in the lawn service industry, and you may have heard of it as soil cultivation (coring, spiking and slicing). Most homeowners simply call it aeration.

Benefits of Aeration

In addition to breaking up soil compaction, aeration has many benefits, including:

  1. Nutrient penetration- Essential nutrients such as oxygen, phosphorus, and potassium better penetrate the roots of grass.

  2. Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.

  3. Enhanced water & fertilizer uptake & distribution- Water & fertilizer collect in the holes where soil has been cored out, reducing run off while providing moisture & nutrients directly to the roots.

  4. Stronger roots.

  5. Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.

POWER RAKING

Why Power Rake?

Dead grass roots, old grass clippings, leaves and other time compounding organics are referred to as thatch build-up. These congested materials settle and compact underneath live grass making it difficult for oxygen and other nutrients to reach starving roots. The problem is that grass does not know when to stop producing thatch because man has mutated the different strains for his own purposes. With too much thatch, a lawn can become yellow and the blades unhealthy because of lack of oxygen, water, and other nutrients that do not penetrate this thick layer. When thatch becomes ½ to 1 ½ inches thick, the best known removal is to rake it out. Using a power rake is the simplest and most effective way to do this.

What is Power Raking?

A power rake is a machine that has free-swinging keys that spin at a rate of 18 to 30 revolutions per second. As these keys slam down on a lawn they force dead grass and other matter to the surface, allowing it to be picked up and hauled away.* The keys also have sharpened corners that slice into the sod for a surface aeration. Many of the advantages of aerating are produced by a power rake, but on a much smaller scale.

*NOTE: We do not clean up the grass and debris brought to the surface following power raking. We recommend that you bag it up as you mow over it or use a leaf rake for clean up.

Benefits of Power Raking

When done correctly, power raking benefits include:

  1. Removal of Thatch- Water and fertilizer can more easily reach the roots without running off or evaporating.

  2. New Lawn Growth- Lawns without choking thatch can send up more new shoots, thus staying renewed, young, and green.

  3. Level Rough Surfaces- When worms rise to the surface, they tend to make hundreds of lumps all over the lawn. The rapid action of power rake keys will reduce these lumps and others that may appear for various reasons by up to 60 percent.
